What is a Gastroenterologist?
Gastroenterology is a medical specialty
dealing with diseases of the digestive system. The digestive system
is the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas and gallbladder.
Gastroenterologists have the same medical training as all doctors and then
complete several additional years of training in Internal Medicine and
conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.
Is Dr. Imam Board Certified

Yes, he is certified by the American
Board of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and is a Fellow of
the
The American College of Gastroenterology.
He is also a member of the The American
Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, The
American Medical Association, and the Michigan
State Medical Society.
What Kind of Symptoms and Diseases
do You Treat?
You may be referred to a Gastroenterologist
to evaluate the following symptoms: heartburn, abdominal pain, reflux,
nausea, difficulty swallowing, diarrhea, constipation, bleeding from the
GI tract, anemia, symptoms of liver pancreas or gallbladder disease, jaundice
and hepatitis. Diseases that are diagnosed and treated include:
ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diverticulosis and diverticulitis,
polyps, Crohn's disease, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, gallstones
in the common bile duct, hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver. Gastroenterologists
frequently perform endoscopy procedures to diagnose and treat many conditions.
What is an Endoscopy Procedure?
Endoscopy procedures include gastroscopy
(upper GI endoscopy, EGD), colonoscopy (examination of the colon), sigmoidoscopy
(examination of the first part of the colon) and ERCP (examination of the
pancreas and gallbladder). Endoscopy procedures involve the insertion
of a thin, flexible tube through the mouth or rectum. For your comfort,
these exams are performed under intravenous sedation using mild narcotics.
For more information on endoscopy procedures, see the Procedures
and Preps section of this web site.
