Clear Liquid Diet

It is very important that your bowel be clean before your colonoscopy.  Improper preparation can result in inaccurate results or the need for your exam to be rescheduled.  Clear liquids are totally absorbed or eliminated by the body and leave no food residue in the colon.  No solid food, milk or milk products should be consumed while your are on a clear liquid diet.  The following are examples of  clear liquids:
  • Water
  • Fruit juices without pulp (no nectars)
  • Gelatin or Jell-O, any color except red
  • Coffee and tea without cream or milk
  • Popsicles - any color except red
  • Gatorade
  • Clear broths and bouillons
  • Fruit ice
  • Clear hard candies
  • Soft drinks


Here is an example of what a 1 day clear liquid diet might be like:

Breakfast

coffee or tea 
lemon Jell-O
apple juice

Lunch

beef bouillon
grape juice
lemon fruit ice
lime Jell-O
coffee or tea, or soft drink

Dinner

clear chicken broth
apple juice
grape Jell-O
lime fruit ice
soft drink
